Gigabit broadband providers lining up in Omaha (CivSource) July 8, 2013

Omaha, Nebraska is slated to be a new entrant to the gigabit internet club. The city is nearby Google Fiber city – Kansas City and now has two gigabit providers. Both CenturyLink and Optica Networks are looking at bringing the service to Omaha. Optica has already completed a gigabit fiber to the home network in Cambridge, Nebraska.

Nebraska City officials are still looking for answers to increase the city’s fiber optic services. By unanimous vote Monday evening, the Nebraska City Council rejected all bids for engineering and consulting services to meet the community’s bandwidth needs. Nebraska City Administrator Joe Johnson tells KMA News the 18 RFP’s received from various companies over the past 45 days exceeded the city’s budget. Most of the bids exceeded a million dollars. Johnson says one bid wasn’t considered because a conflict of interest with the city.

Nebraska Link to extend broadband service to Lincoln (Broadband Properties Magazine) February 28, 2013

Mayor Chris Beutler announced that the city of Lincoln has entered into a lease agreement with NebraskaLink, a broadband service provider based in Lincoln, to extend its fiber optic infrastructure to the city. NebraskaLink will use the fiber optic conduit grid recently installed in downtown Lincoln. Beutler said the downtown Lincoln Technology Improvement District (LTID) has recently been expanded to include all city-owned conduit throughout the community.
